About varia

I love taking pictures with my shitty Canon, pretty things like Gwendolynne, writing, The Virgin Suicides, street art, poetry of Anna Akhmatova, French New Wave and pictures of clouds. I am Eastern European and live in Balaclava, in short, I am a Russian cliche whatever that means.

Real Beauty ?

New beauty products; they are announced with all the seriousness of a revolutionary new cure in slick television commercials, promising everything from cellulite free thighs to obscenely thick eyelashes. I love the pseudo scientific language models regurgitate; Penelope Cruz struggles with monosyllabic English on a good day, hearing her say hyaluronic acid is hilarious. Does anyone actually believe that Clean and Clear releases mini-torna

HAIR TRENDS 2009

2009 HAIR TRENDS

The pob, the bob and the pixie were the celebrity choices for 2008, everyone from Agy to Katie Holmes was seen sporting the short cuts. For most of us though, hair is somethin’ not to be messed with. While we admired these brave girls we weren’t in a hurry to part with our long tresses. Not surprisingly then; long, textured, voluminous hair is what it is about in 2009.

RAW: Your Hottest Sustainable and Vintage Fashion

In a time when everyone wears the same leather bomber jacket and hoodie combo all winter, one off designer pieces, vintage fabric and some quirkiness is what we need in our lives. Besides, summer is going boho and what’s not boho about wearing handmade, patterned, girly, natural or secondhand clothing? I learnt many things whilst living with a greenie. For instance, which cartons and packaging were recyclable and w

To the races, to the sea! Spring!!

QV Spring Fashion- Saturday 6th September. QV square was decked out in astro-turf and white picket fences, not to mention a gazebo adorned with Singaporean lilies and jasmine for a runway foray into local and international spring fashion. It felt like a day at the races; patches of blue sky seen through the crowded city skyline; last Saturday was abuzz ,with a slight chill in the breeze that gave the runway models goose bumps on t

Fat: LIMITED In The Name Of Art

Melbourne’s GPO, heritage listed and built in Renaissance Revival style 120 odd years ago, has probably seen a lot in its time. From the mail centre of a bustling new city, to having the sorting hall gutted by fire in 2001, it is now enjoying a new lease of life as a rather natty

The Trouble with Vintage

Savers.Vinnies. Salvation Army.
They were the ‘labels’ we wore at university when times got tough, when Subway vouchers were lunch money and rollies were our cigarettes. It was much more important to spend money on film festival tickets, barely-recalled outings and tons of books. And then splurge rent money on $300 jeans or a dress…. somehow we could justify it.

It seems that as soon as I finishe

For the love of Art- interview with Luke of Skaffs

Five minutes with Luke Feldman, globetrotter, enviable talent and artist behind the sell-out Melbourne exhibition "Perpetual Kagemi."
1. What is the inspiration behind your rather sensuous
ladies? Are they individual characters or based on any
cheeky friends?
It was during High School that I wa

Uglydress.com for all the bridesmaid horrors

Rightio then ladies and gentleman... My gloves are off for the bare knuckled shit fight that is bridesmaid dresses. A lot has been said about teal producing similarly coloured turds in the hapless victims that are forced to wear these ensembles. There is something immediately repulsive about the bridesmaid dress, possibly because they were dreamed up by the bride when she was five and into her Mattel toys. Otherwise the bri

Wedding dress disasters

To be honest, I hadn’t thought of wedding dresses since I was fifteen and an avid fashion drawer with three sisters as make believe clients. Being Eastern European, in those nine odd years since my drawing days I must have attended close to 30 weddings and the dress on each bride washed by like foam in the sea. There were the skinny girls who wore simple bias cut silk sheaths and then there were the girls with overbearing ethnic mot

RAFW- The Melbourne Look

There is a reason why Melbourne hosted the Olympics in 1956, 44 years before arch-nemesis Sydney. Could you imagine anything but grainy black and white representing Melbourne? Our boulevards, trams and city should permanently be viewed in black and white, particularly on an overcast day whilst sipping coffee, staring at the grey sea, reading Baudelaire in black and white. Melburnians have an innate aversion to explosive colour not to ment

Morrison

Fremantle label, Morrison, was established in 2002 by Kylie Radford and Richard Poulson who named their brainchild after their beloved dog, a Kelpie Labrador cross who has sadly passed away since. Regulars at the Fremantle boutique might remember the black pooch that was a permanent feature at the store. This is proof of the unself-conscious attitude of the couple towards fashion. W.A fashion can be rather haughty with all that mineral mo

Perpetual Kagemi. Skaffs event

Make your way past the slinky spider web lighting and expansive bar that is Miss Libertine, up some stairs and batz! You are transported to an intimate gallery space, slyly winking 'city chic' and hidden enough to be one of those little gems you brag to interstate visitors about. Friday night saw the regular Friday night drinks downstairs and a packed out house upstairs to behold the Skaffs exhibition and lay waste to the bar tab while
